How to use

  • The “Sustainable Coffee Challenge Brochure” and “Sustainability Framework Brochure” provide an overview on the topic of sustainable coffee productions and its impacts on the SDG’s.
  • The “15 Intervention Pathway Cards” show 15 different ways to achieve sustainability in coffee production through investments. Each pathway demands a different investment input and offers different results. Thesecards can be used for a role play in class, where each student represents one intervention.
  • The role play with the pathway cards enables students to understand sustainability challenges in coffee production from a different point of view.

Teaching format tip

Case Study

Assign students specific analytical roles before presenting the case. Use structured questioning protocols to guide examination of stakeholder perspectives, decision points, and systemic factors. Have students work in small groups to develop competing recommendations, then debate solutions using evidence from the case. Conclude with reflection on reasoning processes and assumptions that influenced their analysis.

Exercise

Provide structured practice opportunities with clear performance expectations. Students should develop specific competencies through guided repetition and feedback. Use exercises to build foundational skills while encouraging peer learning and collaborative problem-solving approaches.

Simulation/Serious Game

Establish clear learning objectives before gameplay and debrief systematically afterward. Students should document decision-making processes, unexpected outcomes, and strategic adaptations during play. Use multiple rounds to test different approaches and compare results. Connect game mechanics to real-world systems, helping students transfer insights from virtual to actual contexts.
