Teaching format tip

Charts

Train students to read beyond surface data by asking what stories the visualizations tell and what they obscure. Students should identify trends, outliers, and relationships while questioning data sources and presentation choices. Use charts as starting points for generating hypotheses about underlying systems. Have students create alternative visualizations of the same data to reveal different insights.

Infographics

Teach students to deconstruct visual arguments by identifying how design choices influence perception. Students should evaluate information hierarchy, data accuracy, and potential bias in representation. Use infographics as models for synthesizing complex information into accessible formats. Challenge students to verify sources and consider what information might be missing or oversimplified.
