Summary

This study reveals that modern slavery is more prevalent than ever and often embedded in complex global supply chains. Using multi-regional input–output analysis with a slavery satellite account, it quantifies slavery “footprints” across sectors and regions. It highlights how developed economies displace slavery to developing countries through import-heavy consumption, particularly in construction, trade, and agriculture, offering new tools for accountability and transparency.

How to use

Faculty can integrate this study into sustainability, ethics, or global economics courses to critically examine social responsibility in supply chains. Use it to foster discussion on consumption-based accountability, teach input-output modeling in data or environmental economics, or explore how corporate and national policy must adapt. Pair with classroom case studies or ethical audits of real-world companies to engage students in systems-level thinking and social justice.

Teaching format tip

Research Article

Provide reading guides focusing on methodology, evidence quality, and logical structure. Students should identify key arguments, evaluate supporting evidence, and assess limitations. Use articles as springboards for generating research questions or comparing methodological approaches. Have students present critical analyses to peers, emphasizing how findings connect to broader theoretical frameworks.
