How to use

  • This resource can be used to help students develop critical awareness of how language reinforces or challenges systems of power and inequality. Students will gain competencies in recognizing problematic terminology and adopting more inclusive communication practices that respect marginalized communities. They will learn to apply these skills in their own writing and speech to support decolonization efforts.
  • The Inclusive Language Guide works well as a reference resource throughout courses on development studies, communications, social justice, or global citizenship. It can be introduced during early lectures to establish inclusive communication standards, incorporated into writing workshops, or used as a review tool for assignment feedback. The guide is particularly valuable before students undertake projects involving communication about diverse communities.
  • Faculty should familiarize themselves with the guide before introducing it to students and consider reviewing their own course materials through this lens. They should integrate practical exercises where students analyze and revise sample texts using the guide’s recommendations, and encourage ongoing reflection on language choices in class discussions and assignments.
