How to use

  • This framework helps students understand psychological factors influencing sustainable consumer behavior. Students learn to apply evidence-based strategies for promoting environmental behaviors using the SHIFT framework (Social influence, Habit formation, Individual self, Feelings, Tangibility).
  • Valuable for marketing, psychology, or sustainability courses focusing on consumer behavior and sustainable consumption. Can be used as a theoretical framework for course projects or behavioral intervention design assignments.
  • Faculty should introduce the SHIFT framework early in discussions about sustainable consumption. Consider using real-world examples to illustrate each component and having students develop intervention strategies using the framework.

Teaching format tip

Article

Structure engagement around personal connection and critical reflection. Students should process challenging ideas while relating content to their own experiences and developing perspectives. Use articles to stimulate thinking and encourage deeper engagement with complex topics.

Research Article

Provide reading guides focusing on methodology, evidence quality, and logical structure. Students should identify key arguments, evaluate supporting evidence, and assess limitations. Use articles as springboards for generating research questions or comparing methodological approaches. Have students present critical analyses to peers, emphasizing how findings connect to broader theoretical frameworks.
