The Footprint Calculator assesses the Ecological Footprint for an individual based on their consumption and tells them how many planets we’d need if everybody lived like them. It can help students understand how national data is allocated to different consumption categories (food, shelter, mobility, goods, services) and land types.

How to use
Students can apply their systems thinking skills through an exploration of how personal choices connect to broader societal impacts and infrastructure. Additionally, students can build critical quantitative analysis skills by evaluating methodology and understanding limitations.
The resource can be used in lectures (e.g., introducing the calculator’s methodology and National Footprint Accounts), and group work or individual assignments (comparison and reflection on individual results).
Faculty might prepare by using the Ecological Footprint Explorer and getting familiarized with the Ecological Footprint standards.
Teaching format tip
