Summary

This academic article by Halliki Kreinin and Ernest Aigner (published in Empirica, 2022) critically analyzes SDG 8 “Decent Work and Economic Growth” from a strong sustainability perspective. The authors argue that current SDG frameworks remain uncritical of the central causes of environmental crises: economic growth, inequality, and overconsumption in the Global North. Finding that SDG 8 doesn’t meet strong sustainability criteria, they propose a novel framework called “Sustainable Work and Economic Degrowth,” including new sub-goals, targets, and indicators aligned with degrowth economics and latest scientific research on ecological limits.

How to use

Use in sustainability economics, ecological economics, or critical development studies courses. Assign for debates on growth vs. degrowth paradigms. Apply in graduate seminars on SDG critique and alternative development models. Use for research on post-growth economics or strong sustainability frameworks. Suitable for courses examining economic paradigm shifts and environmental limits to growth.

Teaching format tip

Research Article

Provide reading guides focusing on methodology, evidence quality, and logical structure. Students should identify key arguments, evaluate supporting evidence, and assess limitations. Use articles as springboards for generating research questions or comparing methodological approaches. Have students present critical analyses to peers, emphasizing how findings connect to broader theoretical frameworks.
